About Synatur

”Synatur”, stands for ”Synnøve’s Nature and Tourism”.

The married couple, Synnøve and Birger Mathiassen, are responsible for the company. Normally, they live the life of the fisherman in Jøkelfjord, in addition to tourism. Both of us have a formal education within the fisheries, and Synnøve also has formal training in nature-based tourism and certified guiding. They are also both certified skippers. Our expertise has helped make Synatur what it is today.

Our former home (Tyrolean house, 320 m² on three floors) has been redeveloped into two large, separate high standard apartments, which contain:

  • Ground floor apartment: 105 m² (5 persons)
  • Separate entrance
  • Living room
  • Kitchen
  • Bathroom/WC/laundry room
  • 2 bedrooms
  • Cooler room
  • 2 storage areas.
  • First floor apartment: 215 m² (10 persons)
  • Separate entrance
  • Living room
  • Kitchen
  • 2 bathrooms
  • 3 WCs
  • Laundry room
  • 5 bedrooms, hall.

The whole house can be opened up for groups of up to 15 people.

Furthermore, we have a marine facility consisting of:

  • Service building with dressing room/toilet and store room for fishing tackle and freezers
  • Pier facility with a filleting shed
  • Barbecue shed

The barbecue shed can be used freely by all of our guests.

We are under a process of continual development in step with the needs and requirements of our guests, and therefore, you will find us in a variety of different work situations round about the facility throughout the season, but in such a way as not to be a nuisance for your holiday adventures here.

Our motto is to provide the kind of service we would require ourselves.

Jøkelfjord is a tiny community with a population of 65 people, and lacking in services such as restaurants, bars, hotels, theatres and shopping malls, so those seeking more urban comforts will not find them here.

On the other hand, we have a strong local business community including sea farming (salmon, it’s possible to buy salmon from this place during your stay), caravan camp, skiing and hiking, smolt production, a mechanical workshop, and traditional fisheries.

The village also has everything necessary for the optimum experience of tranquillity in spectacular and beautiful surroundings.

The main attraction here is undoubtedly the Øksfjordjøkel glacier.

Our Annual Cycle:

  • January – April is the period when we fish for cod in the Jøkelfjord using gillnets. During this period we are out at sea every day from early in the morning (6 am) until the afternoon (4 pm), but will be at the service of those of our guests fishing in the same waters.
  • March – September is the time for angling and holiday adventures in our fjord. The tourist season starts with anglers and skiers in the beginning of March and gradually transforms into adventure tourism (mountain and fjord) in the summer. Many holidaymakers touring in their own cars visit Jøkelfjord in the summer to see the countryside and glacier. In June we start our “boat trip” season. But this is also the time of the year when the reindeers comes down from their winter grazing to the coast, so this is a good opportunity to experience Sami culture first hand.
  • October – December is the period for repairs and maintenance of our buildings and technical equipment, but also for preparations for the coming season. This is also the time of the year when we take a well-deserved holiday in a warmer climate.
